April 22, 2024 Dear John, For the last 54 years, Earth Day has presented a moment to learn about and raise awareness of the environment. At the Migration Policy Institute (MPI), we are more focused than ever on untangling the ways in which environmental change is affecting migration, whether by forcing people out of their homes, preventing them from moving, or reshaping longstanding mobility patterns. This Earth Day is the perfect time to familiarize yourself with our work. I invite you to begin with our podcast Changing Climate, Changing Migration. In conversations with researchers, scientists, and policymakers globally, we explore cutting-edge policies, new developments, and the different ways in which climate change and migration are intersecting. For instance, we recently spoke with renowned legal scholar Jane McAdam about a landmark climate migration deal that would allow climate-vulnerable residents to move from Tuvalu to Australia. We also looked at the unique threats of displacement and homeland loss faced by residents of mountain regions, with Amina Maharjan. And Adelle Thomas gave us a primer on “loss and damage,” which could lead to financial compensation for people displaced due to the consequences of climate change. There are several new episodes in the works, so make sure to subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, or wherever you get your audio content. Looking for reading material? Our online magazine, the Migration Information Source, features a special issue dedicated to climate change and migration. Our authors examine the climate-migration connection globally and in specific regions, in smart but accessible ways. For an overview, check out our Climate Migration 101 explainer. It is a perfect starting point to learn how climate change is affecting migration, answering common questions and addressing wide-ranging misperceptions.
