April Legislative Update

Michigan House Democrats have regained their 56-54 majority. Democrat Peter Herzberg won the 25th House District in last Tuesday's special election against Republican Josh Powell 60% to 38% with an independent taking 2%. In the 13th House District, Democrat Mai Xiong defeated Republican Ronald Singer 66%-34%. Neither district is regarded as particularly competitive and both previously elected Democratic representatives.

As it regards firearms bills, we will likely see House concurrence in the polling place open carry ban shortly although that ban won't take effect until spring 2025 as it did not receive immediate effect in the Senate. The Michigan Legislature is unlikely to push through any additional controversial firearms bills prior to the election although there may be attempts to slip some anti-gun amendments into the Safe Schools legislation.

Sen. Mike Green Video

For those that missed the news in recent editions of this newsletter, former Senator Mike Green passed away from lung cancer on March 28 at the age of 75. Senator Green was the sponsor of both the shall-issue concealed carry law of 2000 and the subsequent CPL Reform legislation that eliminated county gun boards. He was a strong early advocate of MCRGO and served on MCRGO's Board of Directors. MCRGO Director Chuck Perricone, MCRGO Executive Director Brady Schickinger, and MCRGO Director and Mike's son, current State Representative Phil Green attended the funeral where this beautiful video tribute produced by Mike's grandchildren was presented during the service.

National Volunteer Month

April is National Volunteer Month. MCRGO is thrilled to celebrate the incredible individuals who pour their time, talents, energy, and purpose into the organization's mission, working throughout the year to promote responsible gun ownership and protect self-defense rights for all of us. Through numerous events around the state over the course of the year, social media activism, concealed pistol license classes, the MCRGO Education Committee, MCRGO-PAC, the volunteer attorneys & the MCRGO Legal Foundation, and the member elected MCRGO Board of Directors, their dedication shines through. We're immensely grateful for the hundreds of individuals who offer their passion, skills, and experience to create a vibrant firearms community in Michigan. Thank you. We celebrate you this month and every month!
