The state of US elections and democracy fills us with existential dread. In 2020, House Republicans egged on a violent insurrection that interrupted a peaceful transfer of power for the first time in US history – which many sitting Republican Members supported.

They will now be in charge of the 2024 electoral certification process – and hardliners like Stefanik have already signaled they won’t follow the law.
