Friend,
We talk to you a lot about corruption in our government. From Congress to the Supreme Court, corruption is everywhere, and it poses a major threat to our democracy. But our democracy is under attack from another direction: restrictive voter laws. All across the country, Republicans are passing laws that make it harder to vote because they know they can’t stay in power without these restrictions.
These voting restrictions have an outsized impact on already marginalized communities and Democratic strongholds. Actions like shutting down ballot dropbox locations, limiting the hours of voting sites, and instituting strict voter ID laws are all ways that Republican-led legislatures suppress the vote and keep themselves in power.
Our votes hold power, and that’s exactly why Republicans want to suppress it. They are worried that if we’re all able to freely cast our ballots, they won’t stay in power. Voting rights should be a nonpartisan issue, but unfortunately, it’s not. Passing the Freedom to Vote Act is crucial to counteract all of these unethical voter suppression tactics popping up nationwide.
