Friend,

Imagine a world in which there is no such thing as independent media.

A handful of giant corporations and oligarchs control every single news source. Dissenting voices are silenced. Every story is framed in a way that reinforces the status quo.

This is not some far-away dystopia. It's happening right now.

Common Dreams is one of the last remaining independent, nonprofit news outlets covering the issues that the corporate media never will. Will you make a donation to our Spring Campaign and help keep independent media alive?

From the 1930s through the 1970s, the federal government defended media diversity by preventing media monopolies from controlling the lion's share of the news outlets in any given media market.

But beginning with the Reagan administration's deregulatory revolution and continuing under the 1996 Telecommunications Act signed by President Clinton, ownership of major news media outlets became concentrated into fewer and fewer hands.

Today, media consolidation has been turbocharged by the rise of Big Tech, with just four companies — Meta, Google, Amazon, and Apple — dominating what we see and read online.

If independent media dies out, democracy won't last much longer either. Don't let that happen.

Please make a donation to Common Dreams and help support our critical Spring Campaign.

We can't do it without you.
