John, you may have already heard: This year, TIME Magazine is celebrating our movement to combat the climate crisis.

It’s a profound honor to be given this award alongside other champions fighting for our planet!

During my interview with TIME, we discussed how the escalating climate crisis is deeply personal to me. I’d seen firsthand what it was doing to California at the height of the wildfire season. I’d read accounts of birds falling out of the sky over New Mexico and Arizona. I’d heard the stories of fossil fuel companies poisoning entire communities — many of them Indigenous or communities of color — and all of that, coupled with my own battle with cancer, only intensified my resolve.

We are the first generation to feel the climate crisis in full force and the last that can prevent its catastrophic outcomes. At a young 86, I am compelled more than ever to lead by example and prove that no one is too old or too young to make a difference.

The first step out of despair is simply showing up — something we must all do.

As we face what may be the most critical election for our planet this year, each action we take, each voice that joins this chorus, each donation to support our work, can tip the scales toward a sustainable future.
