This week, Andrew held an art show for this year's NY-02 submissions at the Islip Arts Council Gallery in Bayshore where the winners were announced. Sidney Shurgin from Connetquot High School was named the winner for her piece entitled, "The World is in Our Hands." Sofia Policano from Connetquot High School and Evelyn Bari Visnay from Deer Park High School each received Honorable Mentions. Andrew said, “It is such a pleasure hosting the Congressional Art Competition for New York’s Second District each year and seeing the talent and passion that our young people in the arts have. This year’s winning piece by Sidney Shurgin depicts the feeling that her generation is the future and holds the future of this world in their hands. Her art will be displayed in the Capitol for one year, where members of Congress, staff, and visitors from all over the world will be able to view her work. I thank all of this year’s participants for their submissions and the Islip Arts Council for lending their expertise to the selection process.” WHAT'S NEW IN NY-02 Andrew Honors Suffolk Law Enforcement Officers This week, the Suffolk County Police Department honored members of the police force at the Suffolk County PBA Awards Dinner. CASEWORK HIGHLIGHT: Addressing Passport Delay A West Islip resident contacted Andrew's office on Tuesday regarding a passport for her minor child. She had applied for her three children's passports well in advance of her travel, had received two out of three, and could not get an update on when the last passport would be completed. Andrew's casework team was able to inform the passport agency of their imminent travel this weekend and secure approval and delivery of the passport in time. Andrew knows how frustrating dealing with bureaucracy can be. That is why he has an entire team dedicated to helping constituents get what they need from the government. If you need help dealing with a federal agency, contact our office and our team will get to work on your case. KEEPING UP WITH CONGRESS House Passes National Security Supplemental Package Yesterday, the House passed the National Security Supplemental package which would provide funding to combat threats from Russia, China, and Iran. Failure to stand with our allies would mean emboldening our adversaries and ultimately endangering Americans. Andrew was proud to vote for this legislation to deliver crucial aid for Israel, Ukraine, and Taiwan and address American border security. Together, these bills strengthen our national security and show Russia, China, and Iran that the United States will not stand idly by while they seek to extend their influence at the expense of the U.S. and our allies. Homeland Security Committee Holds Hearing On Woefully Inadequate DHS Fiscal Year 2025 Budget Request At a time when illegal immigration is at an all-time high and the U.S. faces rising threats from our adversaries abroad, we need to be doing more to strengthen our national security, not less. However, DHS Secretary Mayorkas requested a FY2025 budget that wholly fails to account for these challenges. This week, the Committee on Homeland Security held a hearing where Members questioned Mayorkas about his woefully inadequate budget request and his plans to address everything from border security to cybersecurity. Watch Andrew's line of questioning here. Andrew Condemns Iran's Unprecedented Attack on Israel Last weekend, Iran launched an unprecedented direct drone and missile attack on Israel, America's greatest friend and ally in the Middle East. "My prayers are with Israel as they face this abhorrent attack by Iran. Now more than ever, the United States must be unwavering in our support of our friend and ally as they continue to defend their people and their very right to exist as a free and sovereign nation," Andrew said at the time of the attack. Then he joined with his colleagues in the House voting for H.Res. 1143 condemning the attack, which passed with an overwhelming bipartisan majority. Thanks for reading!
