Dear John

Today is Blue Shirt for Burma Day, when people all over the world are wearing blue, the colour of prison shirts in Burma, to help raise awareness and make sure Burma’s political prisoners are not forgotten.

Please add your support today and wear blue for Burma’s political prisoners. If you use social media, post a picture of yourself, explaining why and use the hashtag #blueshirt4burma

This week the military regime released over 3,000 prisoners in a regular prisoner amnesty. Around 100 were political prisoners but most of them were very near the end of their sentence. In a cruel move, prominent Christian leader Reverend Hkalam Samson was one of those political prisoners released, only to be re-arrested just hours later.

You may have seen in the news that Aung San Suu Kyi had been moved from prison to house arrest, but also reports suggesting she is still in prison. It is currently impossible to verify where she is currently being held.

The number of political prisoners in Burma has risen by almost 1000% compared to the previous military dictatorship. More than 20,000 political prisoners are currently detained by the Burmese military.

That’s why we must keep up the pressure for all political prisoners to be released.

The is the one day of the year when everyone comes together for Burma’s forgotten political prisoners. Please join us.

Thank you
