Hello Friend,

Happy 420 to those who celebrate! April 20th is an unofficial cannabis holiday. Whether you’re a marijuana user or not, today is a great day to think about drug policy in America, and the Green Party’s important role in changing drug policy for the better. Why are Greens uniquely able to work for better drug policies?

Because we don’t take donations from lobbyists, interest groups, or PACs! But that means we need the support of people like you.

My name is Robin Lee Vargas, I’m running for state senate with the Green Party in Texas, where recreational marijuana, and even medical marijuana, are still illegal. Despite Texas being home to famous pot smokers like Willie Nelson and Houston rapper Chamillionaire, bills to decriminalize marijuana have repeatedly stalled in the Texas senate.

Besides criminalizing what many people consider safe recreation and/or important medicine, the harsh drug laws in Texas (and in many areas of the country) also contribute to the militarization of the border. Profits from trafficking marijuana into Texas helps fund drug cartels, who bring violence and chaos to both sides of the border.

Are Republicans to blame for the conservative marijuana laws in Texas? Not entirely. Both of the duopoly parties are to blame.

The Democratic incumbent state senator I’m running against, Morgan La Mantia, comes from a family that gained wealth via a beer distributorship. Her family loaned $3.3 million dollars to her first run for office in 2022. La Mantia sits on the committee in the Texas Senate where the marijuana decriminalization bills have been tabled. Her conflict of interest couldn’t be clearer – Morgan La Mantia is a representative of the alcohol industry, actively blocking one of its top competitors, marijuana.

That’s part of why I’m happy to be running as a Green. We don’t take donations from lobbyists, special interest groups, or corporate PACs. Only individual grassroots donations. I am a proud working-class Latina, and my family will not be loaning millions, thousands, or even hundreds of dollars to my campaign.

Do you have a monthly weed budget? Could you spare a few dollars from it? Or Perhaps comntribute an eighth of it, as a monthly donation <[link removed]> to the Green Party, so more Green candidates like me can challenge America’s disastrous drug policies?
