John, Six months ago, I announced that I would not seek another term in Congress. Since then, I have enjoyed the chance to reflect, and celebrate our achievements from over the past few decades. Together we have made incredible progress in international trade policy, historic preservation, animal welfare, cannabis legalization, international water and sanitation, healthcare, infrastructure, and so much more.

I think it's time for someone else to have the opportunity to represent this fabulous congressional district, and I am excited about the political prospects for the next Congress. I am increasingly confident that if we all do our jobs, Democrats will gain control of the House. In fact, it's even possible that Democrats take charge before the next election. I made that prediction months ago to the New York Times, who wrote an article indicating it may come true quicker than we think. Now, with at least 19 incumbent Republicans not seeking re-election this year, we've narrowed the gap impressively.

Every day there's another Republican on the wrong side of their district and the wrong side of history. As I send this to you, we are finally taking votes to send aid to Ukraine, a vote which Republicans refused to do in a timely fashion, when the Ukrainian people first needed it. It should have been done months ago, with far less drama, and that's a big reason why Democrats need to take back the majority.

While I'm not running again, I am deeply involved with making sure that we win control of the House of Representatives. For 30 years, I've been proud to be involved with growing and protecting the Democratic majority.

As our Oregon primary approaches and the field for November comes into focus for Congress nationally, I will share some special candidates that I'm supporting. A handful of races, including here in Oregon, will determine the next Speaker of the House – a contest we cannot lose.

Together, we can make a critical difference in the districts that will determine the next speaker. I look forward to working together to protect democracy by taking control of the House and offering hope for a different type of politics.
