Today is 4/20, John.
While many see this as a day to celebrate legalized recreational and medicinal marijuana — today, we want to recognize and uplift the work needed to end the racist and unjust War on Drugs.
The War on Drugs started over 50 years ago and it is still raging in neighborhoods across the country. And it continues to disproportionately harm Black and Brown communities.
Studies show a Black person is 3.6x more likely to be arrested for marijuana possession than a white person, even though Black and white people use marijuana at similar rates. In just one year, Latinos made up 77% of federal marijuana sentences.
Pramila knows this moment demands action. She successfully pushed the White House to issue pardons for everyone with federal convictions for simple possession of marijuana. And she knows we need to continue pushing to fully deschedule marijuana.
