Last night, a Greg Abbott-appointed judge initiated proceedings to remove Travis County District Attorney José Garza from office. This is an extreme new assault on local democracy in Texas that we must do everything we can to resist.

José Garza is a popular local prosecutor who just secured the Democratic nomination in his re-election campaign by overwhelming margins. Despite the efforts of multiple right-wing billionaires—including Elon Musk—José won his primary on March 5 by a landslide, 67% to 33%.

But now Greg Abbott and the GOP are trying to undermine that result.

John, it will take all of us to protect the progress we’ve made. José Garza was elected with overwhelming voter support in 2020 as part of the national movement for racial justice and police accountability. We can’t allow the GOP to rewrite the law to pursue their reactionary political objectives. We must fight back.

That’s why we are organizing in places like Bell County, Caldwell County, and the cities of McAllen and Dallas. These are places where targeted progressive investments can go a long way to change who wins races up and down the ballot.
