Dear John,

Today marks 25 years since the Columbine High School massacre. Today, we remember the 15 lives we lost when a gunman opened fire in one of the deadliest school shootings ever.

My heart is with the families and friends of the victims. I know from experience that these anniversaries bring back painful memories of lives that were taken from us too soon. I’m praying for all who were affected, today and every day.

The Columbine massacre marked a turning point in America’s understanding of the dangers of gun violence. If our children weren’t safe in their own schools, how could we function as a society? All across the nation, parents and families begged for action so tragedies like this would never happen again.

But sadly, 25 years later, communities across the United States have been rocked by additional school shootings like Sandy Hook, Parkland, and Uvalde. Where did we go wrong?

The epidemic of gun violence continues due to a lack of action from too many elected officials. We can help prevent these tragedies with commonsense gun safety legislation, but politicians backed by the NRA continue to block our efforts in Congress.

Advocates like me have been pushing for solutions like a federal assault weapons ban. We’ve fought for stricter background checks, red flag laws, and community violence intervention funding. But until Republicans at all levels of government are willing to put people over politics and give up their allegiance to the gun lobbies, we’ll be challenged at every turn.

We must never accept the status quo of school shootings that devastate families and communities. We must continue fighting for tangible policies that will turn these events into memories from the past.

In honor of the lives we lost at Columbine, my son Jordan, and all the other innocent victims of gun violence these past 25 years – I promise to keep up this fight. We must never give up on this issue.

Onward,

Lucy McBath
