John,

More than 50 years have passed since the passage of the Controlled
Substances Act, which scheduled and classified marijuana in the same
category as heroin.

To be blunt: marijuana doesn't belong in the same category as heroin.

Most of us now live in a state that has legalized recreational use — and
with 70% of Americans supportive of pot legalization, you might be asking
yourself what’s preventing federal legalization.

Unsurprisingly, the answer is Congress, and those with half-baked
positions, like our part-time senator Ted Cruz, still hold enough sway to
prevent full legalization.

But not if we have to say anything about it.

It’s clear that Ted Cruz isn’t going to do the right thing — so we’re
making good on our pledge to cut him from the Senate this year. [ [link removed] ]If
you'd like to force our half-baked senator into retirement for good,
please contribute $4.20.

There’s a much darker side to this story,
John — one we think might
explain why Ted and so many others in Congress aren't keen on
legalization.

Groups like GeoGroup — one of America’s largest private prison
corporations — have spent years lobbying against marijuana legalization
and legal immigration to keep their lucrative prison quotas.

According to Open Secrets, Ted ranked as the 8th largest recipient of
for-profit prison money — both directly and indirectly. As a result, more
than 70,000 nonviolent Texans are arrested annually for small marijuana
possessions that would not be considered illegal in nearly half the
country.

There’s no good reason for this,
John — unless your priority is
serving the interests of for-profit prisons over your constituents...

Meanwhile, Colin Allred has supported not only decriminalization but full
legalization and won his first congressional campaign against Pete
Sessions, a Republican staunchly opposed to drug reform.

Texas is long overdue for a leader who isn't beholden to for-profit
prisons. [ [link removed] ]If you agree with us, please pitch in $4.20 or whatever makes
sense to you today.
