Dear John, I thought that you needed to know what our New York team accomplished this week.
This past week, as part of our ongoing Ceasefire advocacy, NIAC Action's New York Chapter sponsored and led a team of 23 volunteers from New York City down to D.C. to meet with leading lawmakers from New York - including staff for the Senate majority and House minority leaders - to call for a ceasefire, halting an escalation to war with Iran, surging humanitarian aid and halting all offensive weapons transfers to Israel.
[[link removed]] We’re proud to have organized Ceasefire Advocacy Days [[link removed]] with Peace Action, the Friends Committee on National Legislation, and 50+ other orgs.
Our team had meetings with the offices of Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, as well as Representatives Dan Goldman, Nydia Velazquez, and a member-level meeting with Jamaal Bowman. Teams from Maryland and Virginia also met with their Senators and Representatives in Washington, DC, and other NIAC chapters are meeting with their lawmakers all across the country to stand up for peace and reject war.
At times, the meetings were incredibly disheartening and at others times, incredibly hopeful. Like when we spoke with Congressman Bowman.
[[link removed]] But regardless of who we met with and how good or bad their positions were — we showed up, we pushed, we made our demands clear, and we are going to continue to do that.
This conflict grows ever larger and more horrible by the day and we urgently need a ceasefire. I'm praying for the safety of everyone in Iran, Israel, and of course, for Gaza. This is a difficult, complicated time for so many of us. But, I’m immensely grateful to have this opportunity to advocate for peace, human rights, and united opposition to war.
This is only possible with the strength of our members - as well as members of other organizations from different backgrounds - who took time out of their busy lives to join us in showing up and demanding peace.
