We wouldn’t be continuing to fight and support our candidates' campaigns (which takes funding) if flipping the Senate and keeping control of the House wasn’t critical. The COVID-19 crisis has laid bare the absolute immorality of for-profit healthcare, and the myriad of ways it exploits both patients and frontline workers.

According to Dr. Anthony Fauci, our most optimistic projections mean hundreds of thousands of Americans may die from COVID-19 and complications from the disease. Thousands if not millions more will be hit with medical bills that COULD bankrupt them.

That’s the reality facing many of our candidates right now. Cori Bush (MO-1) has been battling pneumonia. She does not have health insurance since leaving her healthcare administration job to campaign full time.

Isiah James (NY-9) has been without private health insurance for years, and relies on the services available to him as a veteran through the VA. On April 2, he was struggling to breathe and rushed to his local VA emergency room. Although he has all the markers of a COVID-19 infection, he was unable to get tested because his symptoms were not yet serious enough.

The widespread lack of testing and backlog of results mean we still don’t have a clear picture of the extent of this crisis. Meanwhile, working people without insurance are forced to wait until their symptoms are life-threatening before they risk financial devastation at the ER.

None of this is acceptable, yet Congressional leadership continues to oppose Medicare for All.

It’s why we do the work we do, and it’s why our candidates continue to fight -- even from their hospital beds -- for healthcare as a human right.

BNC candidates are not seeking office for fame or wealth. They are trying to create real, lasting change to make Congress work for all of us.
