Black bears are out of their winter dens and foraging for food. Prevent bears from accessing food in your garbage by using bear-resistant trash containers. Reducing food attractants is crucial to avoid attracting bears to residential areas, which can lead to dangerous interactions.

Though most of New Jersey's black bears live in the northwest portion of the State, black bears have been sighted in all 21 counties. If you see a bear, remain calm, avoid eye contact, and back away slowly. Do not run.
