Friend,
Last week Politico released an article exposing how Republicans are using super PACs to test the boundaries of campaign finance law. We’ve known for years that super PACs are underregulated and full of loopholes for corrupt campaigns to take advantage of, but it’s become clearer than ever this election cycle.
The law states that super PACs are not allowed to coordinate with campaigns, but there seem to be very few consequences for those campaigns and super PACs that break the law. The article goes as far as to call this a “Wild West campaign financing system,” and if we don’t pass stronger campaign finance laws the Wild West will just keep getting wilder.
Our President Tiffany Muller says, “The GOP’s relentless efforts to dismantle regulatory bodies is directly responsible for the unchecked abuse of our campaign finance system. By defanging the FEC, Republicans have effectively sabotaged the agency tasked with safeguarding our democracy from corruption.”
