CFT joins labor and community allies to call out Taxpayer Deception Act
On Wednesday CFT President Jeff Freitas was joined by nurses, firefighters, and community allies to call out a dangerous and deceitful initiative headed toward the November ballot that would limit the ability of voters and state and local government to fund services, including schools.
While the ultra-wealthy real estate developers and landlords who are putting the Taxpayer Deception Act on the ballot want us to think this measure would help the average taxpayer, it would actually create new loopholes that lower their taxes and help them avoid paying their fair share.
According to the independent Legislative Analyst's Office, the measure would cut billions from state and local services, forcing deep cuts to local public schools, public safety, and other essential programs.
Keep an eye out for this deceitful initiative and look for ways to get involved in the months ahead to defeat it.
Tell Congress to repeal the WEP and GPO
Two provisions of the Social Security Act—the Windfall Elimination Provision and the Government Pension Offset—substantially reduce or eliminate the earned Social Security benefits of the millions of retired teachers and public employees who contributed to Social Security through other employment. Thousands more are penalized every year as they retire from public service because their state, municipality or school district does not participate in the Social Security system. It's time for Congress to fix this; tell them to repeal the WEP and the GPO. Sign the AFT petition today.
