ACTION ALERT: Kindergarten Bill Passes Senate Dear Friends, A bill passed the Senate this past Tuesday (S.B. 285) that would alter requirements for Kindergarten in Michigan. There was no time given for public input in committee—it was quickly read in and passed out onto the Senate floor for a vote. It now moves on to the House. This bill might not seem too bad on the surface, but it presents a potential threat to homeschooling (in addition to the other bills we're watching). The problem is that the language is unclear regarding the requirement to notify the public school if you do not intend to send your child there at age five. There's talk about how this could be used to back-door registration for homeschoolers. For now, there's a lot we don't know. The language is confusing and inconclusive. Some legal experts think this would be a universal notification mandate for all five-year-olds in Michigan, and some do not. We encourage you to read the bill yourself (click here). We'll be tracking this closely and providing updates as it goes to the House. ACTION NEEDED: Please contact your House Representative (click here) and tell them you want a clear exemption for private schools and homeschools from having to notify the public school in order to opt out of mandatory kindergarten when this bill (S.B. 285) reaches the House!
