Governor Youngkin vetoes abortion-related shield law bills
John,
Gov. Glenn Youngkin vetoed four bills that would have protected reproductive healthcare providers from extradition to other states for abortions performed legally in Virginia.
Virginia remains the only southern state that hasn’t passed restrictions on abortion following the overturning of Roe v. Wade. We are the last bastion in the South. However, neighboring states have already imposed severe limitations, forcing women to seek care across state lines, including Virginia.
As extreme politicians across the country seek to pass further restrictions on family planning, reproductive healthcare, contraception, and more, we must make sure that reproductive care remains safe and accessible across our Commonwealth. That means protecting both patients and providers, recognizing that politicians and judges shouldn’t dictate what a woman can or can’t do.
If we want to protect reproductive freedom for every Virginian in 2025, it starts with electing a pro-choice Governor who will always support a woman’s right to choose and make sure that reproductive healthcare remains safe, legal, and accessible.
As long as these attacks on our fundamental rights continue, it’s no exaggeration to say abortion will be on the ballot in 2025, so we must be prepared for the campaign ahead. Will you join us today to lay the foundation for next year?
