John, I have some amazing news for Delaware and the country. For the first time in ten years, fatal opioid overdoses in our state have decreased.

John, I’m reaching out to share some important news: for the first time in ten years, fatal opioid overdoses in our state have decreased. That means more of our friends, family members, and neighbors are still here with us today.

I’m proud to share that this is a national milestone, too: Delaware is the first state in the country to see a decrease in fatal opioid overdoses! As we continue to lead on this issue, other states will be looking to us as a model of collaborative and community-oriented approaches that deliver real results.

I’ll be honest, it has been a tough fight to get to this point and we still have a long way to go to put an end to the epidemic – and I know from my on-the-ground work that it will take all of us working together to turn things around. This encouraging news is only possible because of our state’s widespread efforts and community partnerships with advocates, local organizations, and public health officials.

As Lieutenant Governor, combating substance abuse disorder and empowering healthy communities has been one of my top priorities. Earlier this year in Brandywine, I went door-to-door to tackle the epidemic firsthand, and I was grateful to be joined by local leaders in the effort. I provided service referrals and handed out life-saving Narcan, going through 200 doses in an hour! (I always carry Narcan with me as I travel around the state!)

Giving Delawareans the tools and knowledge to protect their loved ones is something I’ve been working towards from all angles. I’m not afraid to roll up my sleeves and get the job done, and with an emphasis on working with local communities to deliver for all Delawareans, we’re already seeing results. These are exactly the kind of outcomes you can expect to see from me as your next Governor!
