The Michigan State Police (MSP) and Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) are partnering together to offer free gun locks to the public at MDHHS county offices and some local health departments in an effort to protect children from unintentional firearm injuries.
The cable-style gun locks were purchased using $500,000 in state funding appropriated in the FY24 MSP budget for the distribution of firearms safety equipment.
Michiganders can visit their local MDHHS office to request one of the free gun locks while supplies last, and they can also check with their local health department, some of which will have gun locks available.

Driver inattention is the leading factor in most crashes and near-crashes. April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month, and for your safety, and that of everyone on the road, the MSP is reminding drivers to keep tabs on the road ? not on your phones.
Michigan?s ?hands-free law? prohibits manually using a cell phone or mobile device while operating a vehicle in Michigan. Under the law, a driver cannot hold or support a phone or other device with any part of their hands, arms, or shoulders.
As a result, drivers cannot manually do any of the following on a cell phone or other electronic device while driving:
- Make or answer a telephone or video call.
- Send or read a text or email message.
- Watch, record or send a video.
- Access, read or post to social media.
- Browse or use the Internet.
- Enter information into GPS or a navigation system.

Earlier this month, the MSP hosted over 450 attendees from across the nation and Canada at the two-day Women in Law Enforcement Conference in Grand Rapids.
The agenda was designed to showcase equity and promote excellence for individuals working in the policing community. Some topics included genetic genealogy, the 30x30 Initiative, resilience, the power of sisterhood and gaining momentum through adversity.

Spring is officially here! Now is the perfect time to clean out your house and medicine cabinets.
Saturday, April 27 is the Drug Enforcement Administration?s (DEA) ?Drug Take Back Day,? and all 31 MSP posts will participate in the one-day ?Take-Back? effort. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. you can stop by to safely discard expired, unused and unwanted pills, which will be destroyed. No liquids, inhalers, patches or syringes are accepted.
If you can?t make it on Saturday, all MSP posts accept unwanted pills weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. (except holidays).

National Work Zone Awareness Week (NWZAW) starts April 15 with the message for every motorist that ?Work zones are temporary. Actions behind the wheel can last forever.? NWZAW seeks to raise awareness about the workers, motorists, and families of those killed in road construction work zones this past year and encourage motorists to drive safely in work zones.
Preliminary data shows there were 7,237 work zone crashes in Michigan in 2023, which included 17 fatal work zone crashes, resulting in 20 fatalities. Two of the fatalities were road workers. There were 1,896 people injured in work zone crashes.
MSP?s message to motorists is to slow down, be alert, and remain focused on the task of driving, especially in work zones.
Across Michigan, troopers will be working closely with the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) to increase police enforcement in work zones, including dedicated patrols in work zones funded by road project monies and speed enforcement funded by the Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning.?
As construction projects occur throughout the summer, it is important to know where they are located and to plan ahead. The best place to go for this information is the MDOT Mi Drive web page at www.michigan.gov/MIdrive. This site provides information about current construction zones, road closures, and traffic incidents that may impact travel.

 Earlier this month, the MSP Canine Unit received 14 donated canine first aid kids from DogWatch of Southeastern Michigan! Each first aid kid contains bandages, peroxide, nail clippers and tick removing tools. Thank you for the generous donation!
