Put on your petticoats, because we’re going back to 1864

Did we accidentally go into a time machine? Because it’s really starting to look like the 1800s around here. And we mean that literally — in case you haven’t heard, the Arizona Supreme Court recently upheld an 1864 abortion ban that was passed before women had the right to vote.

Our views as a country have changed on a lot of things since 1864, like thinking that children maybe shouldn’t be working in factories and that it would probably be a good idea if everyone had the right to vote. And since then, most (but still not all) Americans have become more supportive of one’s right to bodily autonomy. We asked national voters whether they support Arizona’s near-total abortion ban and find that 66% oppose it, including half of Republicans.

Because of the backlash to abortion bans across the country, former President Donald Trump is trying to run away from his party’s position on abortion faster than he can run out of a New York City courtroom.

In a recent statement, Trump said that abortion policy should be left up to the states, not the federal government, and respondents are evenly split on whether Trump is being honest (45%) or dishonest (45%).

It’s hard to imagine Trump being honest about what he ate for breakfast this morning, much less his willingness to sign a national abortion ban if a GOP-controlled Congress sent him one. Now, it’s up to Democrats to make sure voters know who to blame for overturning Roe.

Here are some other highlights from DFP this week:

It’s hard to have pride in the two-party system

While LGBTQ+ adults generally have a favorable view of Joe Biden and the Democratic Party, LGBTQ+ adults are divided on whether the Biden administration is doing better or worse than they expected, with 45% saying better and 47% saying worse.

Seventy percent of LGBTQ+ adults who identify as a Democrat, including 81% of Democratic transgender adults, also say the Democratic Party should be doing more to protect the rights of transgender and queer Americans from anti-LGBTQ+ legislation. A majority of transgender adults (51%) and a plurality of LGBTQ+ adults ages 18 to 24 (48%) also say neither party cares much about people like them.

The results demonstrate that LGBTQ+ Americans need to see more than performative allyship from Democrats — in the face of right-wing attacks on LGBTQ+ and trans existence, the community needs real protection and support.

High support for legalizing marijuana

To put it bluntly, Dems smoke the GOP on marijuana policy. If you hash out the details, voter support isn’t doobie-ous — legalizing marijuana is jointly supported by Democrats, Independents, and Republicans.

Specifically, 66% of likely voters, including 75% of Democrats, 67% of Independents, and 54% of Republicans, support legalizing marijuana at the federal level for all adults over the age of 21.

The survey also finds strong support for rescheduling marijuana from a Schedule I drug — like heroin and LSD — to a Schedule III drug. And we find that 76% of likely voters support Biden’s pardons of thousands of people convicted of simple marijuana possession.

It’s high time for the federal government to get in line with the 24 states that have recreational marijuana and legalize marijuana nationwide.
