The grim truth is that our world and our ocean are drowning in plastic waste, and most of it is our fault. 11 million metric tons of plastic are dumped into the ocean every year, and the United States is the number one culprit, both in total waste produced AND per capita. That means it’s our responsibility to do something about it.

Plastic pollution is devastating for the environment and wildlife, choking and killing millions of animals every year. As the plastic breaks down — which takes literal centuries — tiny microplastics infiltrate the entire food chain, wreaking havoc on animal body functions and reproductive cycles. Microplastics can even damage DNA and cause changes in gene activity — and once microplastics enter our ocean and environment, they’re almost impossible to clean up.

Tell President Biden to support the most ambitious global plastics treaty possible!

Luckily, there’s a huge opportunity for us to take decisive action. Next week, the UN’s Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee is meeting in Ottawa, Canada for its fourth session in developing the global plastics treaty. It’s the perfect opportunity for America to show global leadership and take accountability for our actions by pushing for the most ambitious global plastics treaty we possibly can.

This global plastics treaty is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to solve one of the greatest environmental challenges of our time, and we owe it to the world and all its creatures to make things right and phase out wasteful plastics for good.
