*A Message from our International Programs Center Chief*

A warm greeting dear colleagues from the International Programs Center (IPC). We are happy to share with you our initial IPC newsletter. These newsletters will highlight some of our productive partnerships, new initiatives and recently released products.

The April 2024 newsletter provides more details about the global and regional reach of our technical assistance programs in 2023, our close partnership with the Oficina Nacional de Estadística y Censos (ONEC) around the 2024 Population and Housing Census of El Salvador, as well as a regional workshop in Senegal. We hope you find these newsletters informative and welcome any feedback.

Technical Assistance

El Salvador Mission

During 2023, IPC worked closely with the Oficina Nacional de Estadística y Censos in El Salvador alongside colleagues from the United Nations Population Fund and the Latin American and Caribbean Demographic Centre. Our goal was to support the development of El Salvador's CSPro-based computer assisted person interviewing application and coordinate assistance efforts in subject matter areas.

Most recently, our IPC team members returned from observing the pilot census in El Salvador, where they were impressed by the logistical and management skills demonstrated by Banco Central de Reservas/ONEC in preparation for El Salvador’s 2024 Population and Housing Census.

Regional Workshop

Senegal

In November 2023, 36 analysts and academics from National Statistical Offices in 16 African countries attended the Population Matters workshop led by our demographers and organized through a collaboration between IPC and the United Nations Population Fund West Africa in Somone, Senegal.

During six days of seminars and discussions, the participants analyzed and applied population projections methods and tools and shared their specific country experiences related to population matters.

One of the most popular topics discussed included the importance of population data when dealing with climate change issues.

⚙️ Data Tool Updates

*Demobase [ [link removed] ]*

Recent versions of Demobase have incorporated cross-border analyses, leveraging data availability in one country to help compensate for data gaps in others.

The project is a collaboration between IPC geographers and demographers that incorporates a wide variety of human and environmental datasets using machine learning.

The team most recently completed a population distribution dataset covering the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Zambia and is currently working on a dataset covering Angola and Namibia.

*CSPRO [ [link removed] ]*
