John,
Donald Trump is 77 years old, just three years younger than Joe Biden at 80. But based on the coverage of both men’s ages in both the right-wing and mainstream media, there’s a good chance a lot of voters don’t know that.
Just this week, Donald Trump appeared to fall asleep during his own criminal trial in New York. Ironic for the guy who calls his opponent “Sleepy Joe,” huh? 😴
But here’s the thing, John: ABC and NBC nightly news programs didn’t think it was worth mentioning. They dug into the nitty gritty of the jury selection process, but completely ignored him nodding off during proceedings.
Profit incentives and a desire for ever higher clicks and views have prompted mainstream media outlets to amplify right-wing talking points about Biden’s age, while all but ignoring the fact that his opponent is just three years younger – and has had his fair share of flubs and slip-ups.
Just imagine if President Biden fell asleep during an important meeting – we would see wall-to-wall coverage on every station.
Talking heads on Fox and Newsmax (in addition to Donald Trump himself) say Biden is too old for the job and that his age should disqualify him — all while they lavish praise on Trump, who’s nearly the same age.
And while the mainstream media might be a little more polite about it, the reality is they’re telling the same story — that Biden’s age is potentially disqualifying while Trump’s age isn’t even worth mentioning.
This is exactly the kind of problem that COURIER was founded to push back against. Our journalists in newsrooms across ten battleground states are committed to getting our readers the facts — not just amplifying right-wing talking points and presenting the side that we think will drive the most ad revenue.
