Dear Friends,

Earlier this week the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee held its first hearing on solitary confinement in a decade – you can watch the hearing here. Prior to the hearing, NRCAT and our partners with the Federal Anti-Solitary Taskforce held a press conference on the steps of the United Methodist Building, across the street from the Capitol – watch and share the video of the press conference.

Help us build on the momentum from this hearing! Join NRCAT and the Federal Anti-Solitary Taskforce for a VIRTUAL Day of Action to End Solitary on May 16. Participants will join ONLINE meetings with the offices of U.S. Senators and Representatives as we push to end the torture of solitary confinement by the federal government and ask for co-sponsorship of the End Solitary Confinement Act. Register here.

I hope you will join me for the May 16th Day of Action. I was inspired by Nicole Davis’ testimony as a solitary survivor during Tuesday’s Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on solitary. In response to a Senator’s question about whether some people need to be held indefinitely in solitary confinement, she said: “Senator, I just think with lived experience, I think that no human being should be placed in solitary confinement.” From my own lived experience, I think the same thing. Will you join me on May 16th as we seek to add more co-sponsors to the End Solitary Confinement Act?

Register here for the VIRTUAL Day of Action to End Solitary on May 16.

In solidarity,

Johnny Perez
Director, NRCAT’s U.S. Prisons Program
