Why is the right to self-defense only granted to oppressors? Biden was quick to condemn Iran’s non-fatal drone response to Israel on April 13. He ridiculously called the Iranian attack “unprecedented” —completely ignoring Israel’s bombing of the Iranian embassy in Syria on April 1 which killed 16 people, including two top Iranian generals. Attacking an embassy is a deliberate act of provocation, equivalent to a direct attack on a country.

Biden understands very well that Israel’s military aggression is destabilizing the region, yet he fails to draw a hard line and explicitly tell Israel “NO.” Despite saying he doesn’t want conflict with Iran to escalate into a regional war, Biden spent $1 billion to shoot down Iranian drones and announced fresh sanctions on Iran. This is a clear move towards escalation. It is exactly because of the US government's incompetent leadership and unconditional support that Israel was emboldened to attack Iran’s embassy in Syria.Also, let’s not forget that Israel's violence in Palestine is central to Israel-Iran tensions, and a ceasefire in Gaza would go a long way in de-escalating the current crisis. 

Despite the tragedies we’ve witnessed in Gaza, there are so many reasons to have hope. It’s been over 6 months and the Israeli military has failed to reach any of its goals. The attack on the Iranian embassy was an act of desperation because they are losing. On top of that, the entire world sees Israel for the nonstrategic, impulsive, and genocidal state it is. The movement for the liberation of Palestine is now a popular peoples’ movement globally! Israel is losing its footing on the international stage, and for good reason. It’s up to us to make sure that we make space for peace to blossom by being consistent in our efforts for liberation.
