John–
This year, my heart was so heavy observing Ramadan, thinking of families in places like Gaza, Sudan and Afghanistan, where people are surviving despite horrifying conditions.
The IRC launched a match campaign to help support families, and the outpouring of generosity from our community (more than 800 donors!) reassures me that there are so many people committed to supporting families facing crisis.
Today, I wanted to share with you one special story that highlights the impact of your support. This is the Hussaini family. ⬇️
When the Taliban took control of Afghanistan, the Hussaini family—Hazar Hussaini, his wife Sanowbar, and their eight children—knew they needed to leave. They were evacuated to the United States, but three of their daughters got separated and had to stay in Afghanistan.
With the IRC's support—and after nearly two very long years apart—the family reunited through the CARE program, which helped provide them with legal representation.
This year, they were able to celebrate Ramadan and share the joy of preparing iftar meals to break their fasts for the first time since they were reunited in the United States.
“It's very important to be with family,” Sanowbar says. “When our daughters were apart from us we were counting the days, we couldn't relax, we were always in this deep anxiety thinking ‘where are they and what are they doing?’ And now they are here, we’ve just lost track of time and we are not anxious anymore.”
You can read the Hussaini family's full story here.
John, reuniting and helping people like the Hussaini family is only possible thanks to the generosity of people like you. I know that together, we can continue to help families around the world enjoy joyous moments like these.
Thank you for your ongoing support.
