Trump tried to appeal to working class voters by arguing he’d be their economic champion in an era of rapidly growing income inequality. According to the Economic Policy Institute, “From 2009 to 2015, the incomes of the top 1 percent grew faster than the incomes of the bottom 99 percent in 43 states and the District of Columbia.”
But Trump’s only made income inequality worse. The U.S. Census Bureau says income inequality in 2018 was “significantly higher” than in Trump’s first year in office, and the California Office of Economic Development economists know why: “The last round of tax policy out of Washington made this worse.”
