Northern cardinal
Range and habitat
These birds live in habitats including deciduous forests, deserts, and urban areas throughout eastern and central North America from southern Canada into parts of Mexico and Central America.
Interesting info
The official bird of seven states, northern cardinals do not migrate. Rare among songbirds in North America, not only do males sing but females do, too.
With a prominent crest and the male's red plumage, northern cardinals are easy to identify. They do not migrate, are quite territorial during the breeding season, and mainly eat seeds, insects, and berries.
