New Orleans DSA - Update

Hey comrades!

Hope y'all have had a wonderful start to your April. Our April General Meeting will be this Saturday (yay!) To ensure we're able to make democratic decisions, please come by or request a proxy to vote on your behalf. Also, come out to the State Capitol on Earth Day (4/22 @ 1pm) to protest Jeff Landry and the GOP's fascist regime -- more information about both below!

UPCOMING EVENTS:

● SATURDAY, April 20th, 12-2pm -- General Meeting: Join us at Nora Navra Library (1902 St Bernard Ave) at noon for our monthly chapter-wide meeting, where we’ll discuss our organizing efforts and make collective decisions about the political work we are doing. These meetings are open to all. Prefer to meet online? Join via Zoom here!

  • In addition to our other organizing discussions, we'll be voting on resolutions to Consolidate Finances of All DSA Chapters in Louisiana; to solidify Consistent Endorsed Candidate Expectations; and to Amend Policy Regarding Slack Membership Qualification (note: resolution text is subject to tweaking/refining between now and GM). Be sure to come or request a proxy so we can vote!

  • Following GM, we'll also be doing some Make Entergy Pay canvassing!

● MONDAY, April 22nd, 1pm -- Down with Jeff Landry: Statewide March on the Capitol! Students, workers, and all others committed to protecting the rights of the people: join our student-led coalition at the State Capitol next Monday!

Our demands include:

  • Community control of the police and an end to racist mass incarceration
  • Protect LGBTQ youth
  • Fund schools and welfare programs, not Israel’s genocidal war
  • Defend Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion programs
  • Legalization for all immigrants
  • An end to the attacks on worker’s rights

And an end to Jeff Landry and the GOP’s entire reactionary agenda!

To learn more about getting involved, email or message us on socials -- DSA New Orleans and SWLA are two of several Louisiana DSA coalition members! Need a ride to the Capitol or can provide one? Fill out this Google Form!

● MONDAY, April 22nd, 6-7pm -- Make Entergy Pay Meeting: Join the fight to take back control over our power at QiQi's (2021 Foucher St). We have many exciting projects planned for the coming year, so come hang out and help make them happen; if you want to attend but can't come in-person, reach out!

● Sunday evenings at 6pm -- Emma Goldman Gathering at Holy Ground: Come talk politics with us and test out how well you believe the things that you think you believe. Reading books is all well and good, but you have to practice pulling it out of your head and putting it into your own words. Beer can sometimes help that process.

REMINDERS:

  • Local Convention approaches… If you're interested in Local Council positions, want to propose bylaw amendments, or could help in convention planning, reach out to any LC member! Convention will be in June -- look out for more information as the date grows closer.

  • The Electoral Working Group is looking to recruit at least one candidate in the 2025 Fall election for municipal offices. Contact Bob M on Slack if you're interested.

  • SIGN CEASEFIRE PETITION: If you have not already, sign the petition demanding City Council call for a ceasefire, stop all support of Israel, and condemn the murder of Tawfic Abdeljabbar. DM the Instagram or respond to this email if interested in getting more involved with this campaign. Follow @nola4palestine on Instagram if you haven't already, subscribe to this constantly-updated calendar of actions and benefit events in the City, and check out NOSHIP's fantastic site of resources, petitions, ways to help, and more.

  • Find our other upcoming events on the calendar on our site!

Hope to see y'all Saturday for an exciting General Meeting!

Solidarity forever,
New Orleans DSA

Not yet a member? The most important tool that the working class has is organization. We're strong when we fight together. We have to build a durable, mass political organization to wield the kind of power we need to win real change in our society. If you aren't a dues-paying member of DSA yet, join today!
