Education Omnibus Bill

The Education Omnibus Bill heads to the house floor after being passed along party lines out of committee. This bill woefully underfunds students and teachers instead investing in the systems that have lead to less than half of our students reading at grade level. We are currently facing a crisis in our schools. Since 2019 when Governor Walz (a former teacher) first took office, our reading proficiency is down by 16%, math proficiency by 17%, and science proficiency by 23%. Furthermore, consistent attendance is at a mere 69%; we?re playing hooky with our own future. These statistics clearly indicate that we have some major problems in our educational system.

The proposed bill, while it begins to address some of these issues, falls short in several areas. A crucial part of education is empowering our parents, which in turn empowers our students. Unfortunately, this bill does not do that. Our parents-the unsung heroes who pack lunches, wipe tears, and navigate the treacherous waters of teenage angst-deserve better.

Local control is almost always the best approach. Our school boards, comprised of retired teachers, parents, and grandparents from our communities, understand the needs of their children best. However, this bill threatens to take away their ability to set their health curriculum. We are essentially telling them that the state knows best, which is not the case. The state doesn?t know all of the children in all of the districts. The school board and the parents; they know their children. We?re taking that away.

Decisions made farthest from the parents are the least effective. While I?m glad that we?re moving in the direction of the Read Act, I can?t help but worry about the generation that we?re missing right now. What about this generation of kids who don?t know how to read? How are we ever going to catch them up?

Empower parents, trust our school boards, and for the love of all that?s educational, let?s save our kids from drowning in a sea of mediocrity!

The Start of Omnibus Season

Now that most of the omnibus and supplemental budget bills have left their respective committees we will begin having more lengthy floor debates on these bills as they make their way to the governor?s desk. While I hope these bills will make it to the floor with only good legislation, the unfortunate reality is that a number of these bills will have unworkable provisions. Oh, sweet democracy, where art thou?

The long evenings and rigorous debate will be worth it to fight for the people of Minnesota. Whether it?s funding for education, infrastructure improvements, or public safety, we know that the decisions made here will ripple across communities. I am honored to continue the fight and stand up for the future of Minnesota.

Happy Passover

Monday marks the begging of the Passover Holiday, a significant Jewish holiday that commemorates the liberation of the Israelites from Egyptian slavery. It?s a time for reflection, gratitude, and family gatherings. It?s a period of both solemn remembrance and joyous celebration, as we embrace the enduring spirit of freedom and the triumph of hope over adversity. May your Passover be filled with peace, happiness, and the warmth of loved ones. Happy Passover to all who celebrate!
