Dear John,

A man shot and wounded a Jewish congregant leaving his synagogue. A group of 20 people assaulted three Jewish teenagers in public. An assailant armed with a knife broke into a Jewish family’s home and said, “I’m going to kill you because you are Jewish” then assaulted one of them. Assailants have even shot at Jewish high school students at school.

There have been hundreds of similar antisemitic incidents on college campuses, leaving most Jewish students feeling vulnerable and unsafe as they face wide-ranging threats on campus and online.

John, these are just a few of the thousands of bomb threats, swatting, doxing, harassment, vandalism and assault incidents that were perpetrated on Jews and Jewish institutions in the U.S. in 2023.

I’m grateful you are a part of our ADL community and can help us speak out and fight against this alarming escalation in antisemitic incidents in the U.S.

ADL’s 2023 Audit of Antisemitic Incidents reports that antisemitic acts surged to historic levels last year, with 8,873 antisemitic acts throughout the year. That’s more than the previous three years combined, and by far the highest on record since ADL began tracking in 1979.

From October 7, when Hamas brutally attacked Israel, to December 31, ADL recorded more antisemitic incidents than in any full year on record.

Shockingly, on average, there was one antisemitic incident every hour of every day throughout all of last year. 24 hours a day for 365 days.

John, this is not just about jaw-dropping numbers. These are our family members, friends and colleagues who are being harassed and assaulted. Not to mention the fear that is permeating Jewish communities across the country as a result.

Make your first gift now to fight this shocking explosion of vicious antisemitism and hate.

At the same time, another alarming trend is the increase of Americans’ deep-seated beliefs in antisemitic tropes.

And perhaps even more troubling is that for the first time, antisemitic attitudes are higher among younger Americans than older generations, foreshadowing a challenging future for the American Jewish community.

Today, 17 percent of Gen-Z agrees that the solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict should be “the termination of the state of Israel.”

John, the time to act is now before this rising tide of hate claims more victims.
