Dear John,

April is Sexual Assault Awareness and Action Month, an important reminder of the many ways we can work to prevent and respond to sexual violence. Everyone has a unique and important role to play in ending this prevalent form of trauma.

The statistics are sobering: 1 in 4 women and about 1 in 26 men have experienced rape or attempted rape according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The numbers are even higher for historically marginalized groups, including communities of color, people with disabilities, and LGBTQ+ individuals.

Our systems – from healthcare to schools to workplaces – need to become equipped to help prevent sexual assault from happening in the first place, and adopting trauma-informed strategies that support survivors when they do come forward.
Speech bubble with the words April is sexual assault awareness month

Healthcare providers can play an especially important role. Through our National Health Resource Center, Futures Without Violence supports the broader health care community to become not just allies, but leaders, in the work to end sexual assault, domestic violence, and abuse:

FUTURES also offers tools and resources for others looking to improve their response to sexual assault, including posters, training videos and other resources for employers, coaches and other school personnel, advocates, and parents. We’ve compiled our best resources on our website here.

We also encourage you to share the National Sexual Assault Hotline: 800-656-HOPE if you or someone you know needs support or if you need to find a rape crisis center near you.

Thank you for your partnership and leadership in addressing sexual assault and other forms of violence and abuse. We all have a role to play this month and every month. Please reach out to us if you would like to learn more about our resources.

Regards,

Virginia Duplessis, MSW

Associate Director, Health Director
