PPADMV Supporter,

Next week, the U.S. Supreme Court will hear a case that could have dire consequences for pregnant people in need of emergency medical care, with nationwide impacts.

In what has become a tragically routine post-Roe maneuver, yet another state’s anti-abortion extremists are seeking new ways to prohibit basic health care, endangering the lives and well-being of anyone who could become pregnant.

Idaho is arguing that its state-level abortion ban should supersede the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA), the federal law requiring Medicare-participating hospitals to provide emergency abortion care for pregnant people. Without this requirement, a hospital could prohibit doctors from fulfilling their federally-mandated duty to treat a pregnant person experiencing a health emergency.

While this case is based in Idaho, a ruling in their favor could encourage other states to bypass EMTALA, and individual activist doctors or hospitals across the country could choose to refuse patients care.

Here are some ways that you can stay engaged in the fight:

1. Join a rally in support of EMTALA in front of the U.S. Supreme Court on April 24: [link removed]

2. Support abortion access funds at our sister affiliates PPMW and PPM, as well as independent abortion funds, like the DC Abortion Fund, Baltimore Abortion Fund, and Blue Ridge Abortion Fund at the links below.
