The last thing Missouri lawmakers should be doing is reducing access to healthcare in a state that has already made healthcare available only as a luxury for those who can afford and access it. Unfortunately, when it comes to defunding reproductive healthcare providers like Planned Parenthood, the cruelty is the point.
Laws like these, passed by extremists in the Missouri Senate, accomplish nothing more than punishing the working poor and patients who rely on clinics like Planned Parenthood for routine reproductive healthcare and other preventative care. Planned Parenthood does not provide abortions in Missouri. However, many Missourians choose Planned Parenthood as their provider of reproductive healthcare including cancer screenings, birth control, STI diagnosis and treatment, well patient check-ups and more. As other providers do, Planned Parenthood is entitled to receive reimbursement for these important services.
Planned Parenthood clinics have long been a target of anti-choice extremists. But make no mistake: Planned Parenthood in Missouri is not being defunded simply because of abortion. Abortions in MO were not paid for by state health care even when they were legal, and now they are illegal due to Missouri’s total abortion ban. This is part of a wider effort to exert a frightening measure of control over our personal lives and private medical decisions.
This will not succeed if we stand together and fight back. Winning this race isn’t just about flipping a seat; it is about sending a message that Missourians are fed up and we will not tolerate this chaos and cruelty any longer.
Thank you so much for your support. And thank you for believing that we can, and we must do better.
Sincerely,
Joe |
