This week, Number 1 WNBA draft pick Caitlin Clark signed a 4-year contract with the Indiana Pacers. Her first year’s earnings? $76,535, less than one percent of the $10 million the first pick in the NBA draft will receive.

According to ESPN, the South Carolina-Iowa championship game was the most-watched basketball game since 2019 (pro or college, men or women).  Just like Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, and Michael Jordan breathed life into the NBA, Clark has the potential to drive the WNBA to new heights – and her pay should reflect that.

Sports aside, the bigger issue is that this is part of a pervasive gender pay gap in America. According to the Economic Policy Institute, women were paid nearly 22 percent less on average than men for equal work, regardless of wage distribution and education level. The disparity is even worse for women of color.

We need to address the stark gender pay gap in America.

Women make up more than half of the workforce in the United States. They bear the same amount of work as their male counterparts and much of the unpaid labor at home.
