Young people urge White House to take action on menthol

Young people across the country recently united for truth’s annual Moment of Action, which this year focused on urging the White House to finalize the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) proposed rules on menthol cigarettes and flavored cigars. In Washington, D.C., 27 young activists met last month with White House officials and 35 members of Congress. Young people around the nation watched a series of videos by truth, and more than 800 have signed a petition supporting the removal of menthol flavored tobacco products from the market.

Concerns about health and mental health increasingly drive young people to quit vaping

Young people enrolled in a quit vaping program from Truth Initiative cited health (56.1%) and social influence (15.8%) as their top reasons for quitting vaping, according to research published in Addictive Behaviors Reports. Researchers found enrollees in 2022 were significantly more concerned about health (56.1% vs. 42.3%), mental health (9.3% vs. 1.7%), and social influence (15.8% vs. 8.7%) compared to 2019 when researchers last analyzed participants’ reasons for quitting vaping.

This week in tobacco policy news

Kentucky – Governor Beshear signed into law a bill that requires school districts to adopt specific policies that penalize students for possession of alternative nicotine products, tobacco products or vapor products and report nicotine-related incidents to the state Department of Education. The bill requires local boards of education to adopt written policies that include the distribution of evidence-based, age-appropriate nicotine prevention and cessation material at the beginning of and throughout the school year.
