Health Equity: The Medicaid Purge Hits Immigrant Families

PIF director Adriana Cadena’s letter in the Washington Post cites mounting evidence that immigrant families have been hit hard by post-pandemic changes to Medicaid policy and practice. While Medicaid “unwinding” is ending, the letter explains why the fight for health equity is just beginning.

May 17: Election Year Advocacy Webinar

Join PIF and experts from Bolder Advocacy for an exclusive webinar: Nonpartisan Advocacy: How 501(c)(3)s Can Educate and Advocate During Election Season. May 17, 1-2:30pm ET.

Though nonprofits must remain nonpartisan, they have a critical role to play throughout the election cycle! Not only can they engage in issue advocacy, but they can also conduct robust voter and candidate education campaigns and mobilize the public to get out the vote. After this session, you will have a better understanding of how to safely engage in nonpartisan advocacy during an election.

Participants will learn:

  • How you can continue to advocate for your issues during election years;
  • How you can educate the public through candidate forums and questionnaires;
  • How you can respond to candidate statements objectively;
  • How you can conduct nonpartisan voter registration and ensure get-out-the-vote efforts are conducted legally;
  • How you can safely support or oppose ballot measures without being partisan; and
  • How staff and volunteers’ partisan activities in their personal time can be kept separate from their activities on behalf of the organization.

This session complements The Rules of the Game: A Guide to Election-Related Activities for 501(c)(3) Organizations.

Education: Join the Education for All Campaign

The National Immigration Law Center is launching a new campaign in defense of every child’s right to learn. The radical right has launched a new attack on the landmark Plyler v. Doe ruling that guarantees free public education for all children, regardless of immigration status. The Education for All Campaign (E4A) is building a broad, deep, and powerful movement to defend that basic right.

Healthcare: DACA Health Care Proposal Anniversary

The Biden Administration proposed expanding Affordable Care Act marketplace access for 130,000 people with DACA one year ago next week. More than 400 partners signed onto a PIF-organized comment supporting the proposal last June. We continue to monitor the regulatory process in hopes that the Administration will issue a final regulation this year.

Advocacy: Urge Congress to Fund Programs that Matter for Immigrant Families

The congressional funding debate is in full swing, and the bill that funds the U.S. Departments of Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education includes programs that matter for immigrant families – from enforcement against Civil Rights violations in schools and workplaces to health equity and the Office of Refugee Resettlement. Our partners at the Coalition on Human Needs are co-leading an organizational sign-on letter urging Congress to allocate a responsible budget allocation for the bill that funds these critical programs. Deadline to sign is Friday, April 26.
