Friend,

Sahara was a shy and gentle mare who was marked and sold to be slaughtered for human consumption. She was doomed to a gruesome death from being bludgeoned and dismembered but was saved at the last minute when the Illinois slaughterhouse she was sent to was shut down.

Sahara was one of the lucky ones who was rescued and got to live out the rest of her days in peace at the Humane Society of the United States’ Black Beauty Ranch. Even though slaughterhouses have all been shuttered in the U.S., almost 20,000 horses from the U.S. are still slaughtered every year because it is legal to transport these horses across our borders to slaughterhouses in Canada and Mexico.

Will you help the Humane Society Legislative Fund fight to protect horses like Sahara and win the vital protections that all animals deserve by making a donation of $20 or more today? We’re up against our April 30 fundraising deadline, and we’re counting on your support to reach our $50,000 goal!

After being saved, Sahara enjoyed a peaceful home with other rescued animals and their human caretakers. She needed a little extra encouragement to play and ask for treats, but she never had to worry about falling victim to senseless cruelty again.

But we can’t rescue every horse and instead need to fix the problem at the source. Right now, we’re fighting to end the abuse of horses from all angles by passing legislation to end horse slaughter and working with the U.S. Department of Agriculture to strengthen its Horse Protection Act regulations to finally end the cruel act of soring.

We can’t afford to scale back our advocacy for animals and let government officials ignore their suffering. But that’s exactly what could happen if we miss our goal, so please:

Can we count on you to make a gift to HSLF today—before our crucial deadline—so we can keep fighting to protect horses like Sahara and other vulnerable animals across the country and the world?

Thank you for your compassionate support for all animals,
