Women Winning Partners with the Minnesota Women's Press Changemakers Alliance Event

On Sunday, April 13, Women Winning's Executive Director, Nevada Littlewolf led the "Diversity in Politics" series conversation at the First Unitarian Society of Minnesota. She discussed how people can support 2024 candidates and campaigns, particularly in Greater Minnesota, where women, young adults, and residents from BIPOC and LGBTQ+ communities have difficulty getting seats at decision-making tables. Nevada highlighted important research and Women Winning's target campaigns attempting to unseat incumbents who are anti-choice. She was joined by Beth Peterson from Vote Run Lead. The event was full of meaningful programming, provided a copy of the "Re-Imagining Public Safety" discussion guide and hosted a conversation on Transforming Public Safety. Junauda Petrus [[link removed]] read from her Minnesota Book Award–nominated storybook, Can We Please Give the Police Department to the Grandmothers? Deneal Trueblood-Lynch [[link removed]] and cast performed from her play Secrets. The 1st Annual Badass Minnesotan winners were announced. Spoken word artist Muna Abdulahi [[link removed]] performed.

Gender Transition Insurance Coverage Could be Required Under New Rep. Finke Bill

Insurance companies covering services for people seeking to change their gender could become required under Minnesota law if a proposal being considered by lawmakers is approved.
Authored by Rep. Leigh Finke (DFL-St. Paul), legislators are discussing a bill that would prohibit a health plan that covers physical or mental health services from excluding coverage for "medically necessary gender-affirming care, or requiring gender-affirming treatments. This clarifies statutory coverage of gender-affirming care into law," Rep. Finke told the House Health Finance and Policy Committee on Thursday. "We want to make sure that all gaps are closed."

Sen. Mohamed’s Bill Promising New Protections for Minnesota Renters Moving Forward in Legislature

Last week, the Senate passed Sen. Zaynab Mohamed’s tenants' rights bill that contained a slate of new renter protections, along with a set of regulations aimed at apartment buildings where a single utility meter is shared by all tenants, which has meant tenants don't get the same protections as other utility customers. DFL lawmakers hope the pair of bills will make a difference for the nearly 1.3 million Minnesotans who rent their homes, after a bill last year dedicated one-time money and a metro-area sales tax to affordable housing and rental aid. "We wanted to bring policies that made that field more of a balanced one" between renters and landlords, said Mohamed.

The Supreme Court Will Decide if States Can Ban Life Saving Abortions

Moyle v. United States should have been a very easy case. A federal law, the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA), requires nearly all hospitals to provide “such treatment as may be required to stabilize the medical condition” of “any individual” who arrives at the hospital’s ER with an “emergency medical condition.” Though the law does not specifically mention abortions, EMTALA is written in capacious terms — requiring covered hospitals to perform an emergency abortion when that is the appropriate treatment to resolve a patient’s medical emergency.
And yet, last January, the Supreme Court effectively nullified EMTALA, at least for patients who require abortion. Moyle, which the Court will hear the last full week of April, asks whether this nullification should be made permanent.
