Welcome to the April edition of my newsletter
** WELCOME TO MY APRIL NEWSLETTER
------------------------------------------------------------
Dear ,
Welcome to my April newsletter, I hope you've all been enjoying the longer and brighter days as we head into spring.
As always, and as we edge ever closer to the next general election, I'm committed to keeping you informed on how I am continuing to address the vital concerns constituents hold across our Borough, through both local and national projects.
Please read on to see what I have been focusing on in Barking and Parliament during recent months:
In the local area I have been working on:
Curzon Crescent Street Meeting
I recently held a street meeting on Curzon Crescent, after many residents contacted me to raise their concerns with limited parking in the area, and particularly a lack of accessible parking for local residents.
It was very pleasing to see many residents at the meeting, along with Local Councillors and Council Officers, to explain the impact of this issue and discuss potential solutions.
With Council Officers present, it was agreed a consultation period will take place to allow residents the opportunity to voice their opinions on changes to the Controlled Parking Zone (CPZ) in the area, which is expected to begin next month. If approved, this will see the CPZ along Curzon Crescent amalgamated with neighbouring parking zones.
I am pleased a consultation period will begin shortly. I will closely monitor the outcome.
Barking & Dagenham College 'Get Further' Visit
It was a pleasure to visit Barking & Dagenham College, where I had the opportunity to witness the outstanding collaboration between the College, and award winning charity, Get Further.
Get Further works directly with the College by matching students studying GCSE maths or English with tutors, who help them to achieve these crucial qualifications. Tutors offer small-group sessions with students tailored to their specific curriculum and needs
It was great to meet members of the team from both Barking & Dagenham College and Get Further, to not only discuss their excellent work but also observe sessions in action.
Kings House Street Meeting
I arranged a street meeting at Kings House following constituent reports of an ongoing gas systems issue. The meeting brought residents together with the Safer Neighbourhood Team, and representatives of Estuary Housing.
The meeting allowed Estuary Housing to communicate to residents the current status of repair works at the site, whilst providing residents with the opportunity to directly express their concerns.
Since this meeting, repair plans are progressing whilst weekly meetings between stakeholders and residents have been established. I will continue to closely monitor the status of the repair works, and ensure residents are not financially penalised as these works progress.
Weavers Quarter Visit
I was pleased to be joined by Local Councillors, residents, and representatives from Bouygues UK, as I visited Weavers Quarter to see the progress of the ongoing remediation programme first hand.
It was particularly important that stakeholders responsible for these repairs were brought together for residents to express their personal experiences as these works continue, and to also raise any questions.
As the remediation programme continues at Weavers Quarter, I will continue to monitor its progress and support all residents impacted.
Equinox House Street Meeting
This street meeting was arranged as many residents at Equinox House contacted me due to a range of issues, particularly associated with anti-social behaviour in the area and longstanding repairs that are yet to be resolved.
The Safer Neighbourhood Team, residents, and L&Q representatives joined this meeting.
Following the meeting, outstanding repairs, such as issues occurring in communal areas have progressed, whilst a follow-up meeting has been scheduled to assess the progress that has been made, and to understand what further actions are required.
And in Westminster:
Barking, Redbridge & Havering University NHS Trust Apprentice Reception In Parliament
What a privilege it was to host the BHRUT NHS Trust Apprentice Reception in Parliament, and celebrate the apprentices that have graduated in the previous 12 months. It was a thoroughly deserved celebration marking a fantastic achievement that will make a real difference across our community.
The Trust has increased the number of apprentices they recruit locally, offering some great opportunities for a career in the NHS. The programme has expanded in previous years, from initially recruiting twenty per year, to currently twenty each month.
APPG on Anti-Corruption and Responsible Tax / Spotlight on Corruption Panel Session
As chair of the APPG on anti-corruption and responsible tax, I co-hosted a panel session alongside Spotlight on Corruption, entitled, After the Post Office scandal, how can senior executives be held to account for corporate wrongdoing?, where experts discussed the UK's performance on holding senior executives to account for economic crime.
It was a timely and important discussion, and as previously stated, I want to make sure all my campaigning efforts against corruption continue into the next Parliament, which events like this will contribute towards.
Fifth Year of The House's Women in Westminster
In March The House magazine celebrated the fifth year of Women in Westminster. The '100' celebrates the achievements and the valuable role women play in public life by recognising one hundred women from across the world of Westminster. The criteria for The 100 are those who have made an impact on politics or public life in the past year and have the talent and platform to inspire the next generation to make a difference. Alongside The 100, our Patrons have also identified six figureheads within their fields who we believe should have their work illuminated in the edition of ‘In the Spotlight’. I was honoured to be nominated as one of these figure heads.
APPG on Anti-Corruption and Responsible Tax - Economic Crime Manifesto
As chair of the APPG on anti-corruption and responsible tax, we have launched our new 'economic crime manifesto' - a document with cross-party support from across the House which sets out new recommendations for any future government to tackle economic crime and dirty money.
With a General Election this year, all parliamentarians – both old and new – will have to work to ensure that the UK is no longer the destination of choice for criminals, kleptocrats, and fraudsters. The next Parliament must continue pursuing the fight against our dirty money epidemic.
Many of these issues are ongoing and I will make sure to keep you informed of any developments as regularly as possible.
I am using Facebook, Twitter, and my website to keep constituents up to date with all my work. Please follow me using the buttons below. If you have something you need help with or a concern you wish to raise, then please do get in touch with me.
