Our impact in 2023

Across the world, ordinary people are doing extraordinary work to ensure everyone, everywhere, can realise the power of their voices. ARTICLE 19 is proud to be part of this global movement for free expression. Together, we are making a concrete difference to the lives of millions of people worldwide.

We invite you to explore the difference we make in our new International Impact Report 2023.

Making an impact in human rights is a long game. Influencing law and policy can take several election cycles, and shifting norms and attitudes can take generations. While the successes in our Impact Report came to fruition in 2023, they are the result of years of sustained work to build sustainable change.

At its best, that change is exponential, as the stories in our report show. We support one person, who empowers their community, who join forces with others to demand better. This ripple effect – pushing outwards, growing bigger, gaining momentum – creates an unstoppable tide of change.

With your support, we can make even bigger waves.

Freedom of expression, or our right to speak and to know, is a multifaceted right. Ensuring all people can enjoy this right across many dimensions – from responsible AI to public-interest journalism, and from protest to information integrity – means that no single sector, let alone a single organisation, can do this work alone.

That’s why the stories in our Impact Report focus on people, their actions, and their power to shape change across their communities, with support from multiple partners, governments, and the UN.

If there’s one thing we know from our work last year, it's that when we come together, amazing things happen.

As we move into the second quarter of 2024 we will continue to address key global challenges, like information integrity around elections, protecting climate justice activists, and putting human rights at the heart of AI.

For now, from all of us at ARTICLE 19, thank you for being part of the freedom of expression movement.

And to those who contribute to our programmes and invest in expression: you, too, should be celebrated for these achievements. Thank you for building a freer, fairer, world.
