It would be easy to dismiss this last year as chaos. But it's far, far bigger than that.

This administration and this Republican-led Congress aren't just targeting the laws that protect us. They are targeting the very idea that we are all worthy of dignity and respect.

They don't want to protect immigrants who consider this country home or expand health care for those who need it most. They believe we must choose whether we invest in rural communities or inner cities. They're turning our society into a zero-sum game where for one to win, another must lose. As if the mechanic in Pittsburgh and the teacher in Tulsa and the day care worker in Birmingham are somehow bitter rivals, rather than mutual casualties of a system forcefully rigged for those at the top.

I've got news for them, Samuel. We don't have to choose who makes the cut. The richest nation in the world should not leave anyone behind.
