Moments ago, House Republicans voted for the first time ever FOR higher
surprise credit card junk fees – an issue we’ve helped President Biden and
Democrats push to the center of the 2024 conversation.

One of Trump’s potential VP picks, Sen. Tim Scott, is leading a similar
effort in the Senate. Specifically, Republicans are trying to overturn a
Biden Administration rule from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau
(CFPB) that would cap credit card late fees at just $8.

In a committee hearing, the Republican congressman leading the charge
said: "The vast majority of Americans agree that [junk fees] are
legitimate. They don't think they're junk." In fact, polls show 9 in 10
voters oppose these abusive fees.

Will you help Democrats fight back?

We’re sharing the growing public response with members of Congress. Our
campaign has been elevated by Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (NY), Senators
Elizabeth Warren (MA), Tina Smith (MN), Sheldon Whitehouse (RI), Chris Van
Hollen (MD), and Jeff Merkley (OR), and Representatives Mark Pocan (MN),
Ilhan Omar (MN), Ro Khanna (CA), Dan Goldman (NY), Grace Meng (NY), and
Lori Trahan (MA).

P Street, our lobbying arm on Capitol Hill, just sent a letter to members
of Congress opposing this Republican attempt to put HIGHER credit card
fees on Americans. It’s signed by 90 national, state, and local public
interest groups including the National Consumer Law Center, Consumer
Reports, Americans For Financial Reform, Public Citizen, and the NAACP in
Sen. Tim Scott's home state of South Carolina.

The American Prospect quotes our Progressive Change co-founder saying why
this matters:

In politics, an argument typically needs two sides for it to be elevated
in the national conversation. "We’ve seen Democratic unity on fighting
surprise junk fees and naming corporate villains like credit card
companies, banks, and airlines," said Adam Green, co-founder of the
Progressive Change Institute, which worked with the Biden administration
last year to arrange local events on junk fees in places like Michigan and
Pennsylvania. "What’s been missing is opponents smoking themselves out and
raising the volume of this fight so the public knows who is on their
side."...

So here we have a potential VP pick and the financial industry teaming up
to support junk fees. Every Republican, including those in swing
districts, will now have to decide whether they support higher costs on
Americans, which will be redistributed to the banks and the card
companies.
