FEC Victory Draws Hard Lines on Soft Money

Federal campaign finance laws help ensure that our elections are transparent and that candidates aren’t beholden to special interests in a way that could foster corruption or drown out everyday Americans’ voices in the political process.

In a rare win, after a complaint filed by Campaign Legal Center (CLC), the Federal Election Commission (FEC) entered into a settlement agreement with a congressional candidate and her state committees, resulting in a significant fine for raising and spending “soft money” — funds that don’t comply with federal campaign finance requirements.

This victory reflects the importance of the law and sends an essential message: Candidates must obey the law when seeking public office and will be held accountable if they don’t. As we approach the 2024 election, it’s more important than ever that the FEC continues to enforce the law and protect voters.
