The State of Student Loan Relief, and what comes next
------------------------------------------------------------
Since 2020 one of the key promises of the Biden administration has been to forgive federal student loans. After the original student debt relief plan was blocked by the Supreme Court, the Biden Administration has looked for opportunities to partially or fully forgive federal student loans wherever they can.

According to Representative Pelosi’s newsletter ([link removed]) , over 220,000 Californians have received a total $10.8 billion in debt cancellation from the Biden Administration’s relief efforts.

Now the administration is proposing ([link removed]) to cancel years of accrued interest—up to $20,000 in automatic cancellation. The proposed rules would also eliminate student debt that is more than twenty years old and discharge loans for people who are eligible for loan forgiveness under earlier plans but are not enrolled in those plans.

These rules will be formally published in the Federal Register today, and the public—that means you—will be able to comment during the thirty-day public comment window. We will develop sample text and send it to you next week. But if you already have something to say, don’t hesitate! The more support the rule changes get, the better.

** Urgent: Help Save Rooftop Solar in the California Legislature
------------------------------------------------------------
A slate of rooftop solar-related bills are in front of committees in both the Assembly and the Senate, and they urgently need your support. Due to changes by the CA Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) and the fixed-rate Utility Tax from last year, which we opposed ([link removed]) , rooftop solar has become more expensive than ever. Current bills AB 1999, AB 2256, and AB 2619 aim to correct this, but utilities’ lobbies are working hard to prevent them from passing.
* AB 1999 ([link removed]) would stop the big Utility Tax by capping it at $10/month and prohibiting it from rising any faster than inflation.
* AB 2256 ([link removed]) would require the CPUC to include all the benefits of rooftop solar when deciding how much credit solar users receive.
* AB 2619 ([link removed]) would repeal the current system of solar credits and require the CPUC to revise their net metering decision to realign with the state's clean energy goals.

Our Assemblymember Phil Ting is on the Assembly Utilities and Energy Committee where these bills are being heard. According to the Indivisible CA Green Team, he has not yet committed to supporting these bills.

We need your calls today: tell Assemblymember Phil Ting to support AB 1999, AB 2256, and AB 2619. ([link removed])

Volunteers welcome: We’re looking for an Editor and a Social Media Person!
------------------------------------------------------------
This year is going to be a busy time, and we’d love a few more volunteers on board to help with editing our weekly newsletter and publishing ongoing social media posts.

Our newsletter team meets every Tuesday night, and our editor helps us make sure everything looks professional, all the links work, and all the commas are in the right places.

Several members of our team post on various social media websites (Twitter, Mastodon, Instagram, etc.).
This is more of an ad-hoc role. We especially would like someone to help us create, schedule, and monitor posts on the Meta Suite (Facebook and Instagram) and Threads. No prior knowledge required—we can train you!

If you’re interested in volunteering, let us know at [email protected] (mailto:[email protected]) .
