Hi John,
It’s just over four weeks until the nationwide lobbying days for a Fossil Fuel Treaty.
We're calling on our supporters right across the UK to take the message about the vital need for a Fossil Fuel Treaty to your local MPs or councillors and to help build pressure on politicians at all levels to back the treaty.
We know that fossil fuels are causing climate chaos worldwide, with the global south paying the highest price. We need a global exit plan to end the fossil fuel era now. We need politicians to sit up and take notice of the Fossil Fuel Treaty. We’ll be sending lots of resources to help you take part and you can also contact us with any questions.
** Fossil Fuel Treaty Nationwide Lobbying Day – 17-18 May
------------------------------------------------------------
* What: Meet your local MP, or councillors (if there is a reason why you don’t want to talk to your MP). Tell them why they should support the Fossil Fuel Treaty
* When: Friday 17 May/Saturday 18 May 2024 (these are the days when MPs usually hold surgeries in their constituencies)
* Where: MP surgeries, or local council offices if you know your MP is unsupportive. Some MPs might arrange meetings online, rather than having you come to their office
We’re trying to keep track of what everyone has planned, so we know exactly who has heard about the Fossil Fuel Treaty. Use the buttons below to let us know if you’re interested in taking action, or to opt out of hearing about local actions for the nationwide lobbying days.

The Fossil Fuel Treaty is a big, bold idea that could make a real, tangible impact on the climate crisis. We want to make as much noise around it as possible, that’s why we need MPs and local councillors all around the country to endorse it.
MPs are the most important people to focus on for these lobbying days as they have power to create change on a national level. Support from local councils, however, will also contribute to creating a groundswell of support for the Fossil Fuel Treaty and making sure our voices are heard by the UK government. So, if you know your MP won’t be supportive then you should also look into meeting councillors in your area.
With the climate crisis accelerating all around the world, fast, effective action to end fossil fuels has never been more urgent. People in the global south, who have done least to cause the crisis, are already suffering from it the most.
Nigeria, for example, has experienced extreme heat throughout 2024, with temperatures reaching nearly 45°C. Analysis found that these temperatures were made ten times more likely by climate change.(1)
The UK’s highest per person emissions are almost twelve times higher than Nigeria’s. (2) Yet while ongoing, extreme heatwaves endanger and disrupt Nigerians’ daily lives, this government is playing politics with the climate and pursuing dangerous expansion of fossil fuel production.
That the UK prime minister can give climate-wrecking fossil fuels a green light as part of a cynical political strategy while people in the global south grapple with ongoing climate chaos is a gross injustice. We need to present an alternative pathway to this government’s dangerous agenda, with a global exit plan from fossil fuels that has a globally just transition at its heart.
We know that our campaigns can create real change. The UK’s exit from the Energy Charter Treaty is part of the ongoing global collapse of this harmful trade treaty. This huge win was helped massively by Global Justice Now activists all around the country. We won that fight together. Now we need to do the same with the Fossil Fuel Treaty.
Big, polluting countries like the UK need to be pressured to get on board with this global exit plan from fossil fuels. That’s why we have to get as many politicians as possible to support it.
Coordinated lobbying days mean we’ll know exactly who has been hearing about the treaty locally and can be sure to keep the pressure up. If enough MPs hear about the treaty at the same time, they might also discuss it amongst themselves when they’re back in Westminster in the following weeks.
Click the buttons below to let us know if you're interested, or that you don’t want to hear more about local actions.

You can email

We will also be holding a briefing meeting at 6.30pm on Tuesday 14 May to prepare for the lobbying days and answer any questions you might have about how to talk to MPs and others about the Treaty. We’ll be sending joining information soon, so keep an eye out!
Thank you
